I have never considered the raw materials that go into road construction. Asphalt is a very precise mixture of aggregate (gravel), binder and filler. The mix of these three ingredients and the consistency vary for different types of asphalt and for different environments – based on the geology, climate and the purpose of the use. The cost and availability of materials must be considered in order to make the project viable and to get the longest life out of the road. Research, thought and consideration must go into the preplanning, as well as the execution and assessing the resulting product. Identifying obstacles or difficulties can help predict potential problems and/or lead to improvements and changes in the next project.
In this course, we were lead through the “raw materials” to consider in educational research for the purpose of constructing our own research in the future or to determine the quality of a research report. This course was presented in a very traditional manner which suited the nature of the content. I was exposed to the terminology and criteria needed to move through the rest of my courses with the confidence that I could identify quality research and participate in collaborative discussions using the appropriate vocabulary.

This was one of the earliest courses I took. I am not exceptionally proud of any of my assignments, but it did set me on my path towards a major topic that I followed through my program – that of the relationship between creativity and curriculum and the pedagogy supporting it. This course required a literature review of a research journal article. This opened the doors to a wealth of information on this passion topic. I included one of the articles here as an example.

I hadn’t created study notes in decades! This was one of the first classes I took and it worried me that the whole program was going to be taught in a traditional style – reading-notes-quiz-paper! Thankfully, this was not the case, but as I mentioned previously, this style suited the content which gave me the basic vocabulary to include in future conversations.
